President of Serbian Diaspora Assembly targeted in Ukrainian
February 24, 2014
“Wanted posters” issued against prominent Serb in anarchic Ukraine amid accusations of spying and terrorism.
Dragan Stanojević, President of the Diaspora Assembly since July 2013 has had a warrant issued against him by Ukrainian websites run by the pro-Western protesters who have seized power in the capital, according to Serb sites Kurir and Srbin.info.
Stanojević has been branded by the Ukrainian site as a terrorist on a mission to kill Ukrainians. Dragan explained he lives in fear a virtual prisoner in his own home not feeling safe to leave due to these wanted posters calling for him to be lynched. The country is in a state of anarchy, he says, there is simply no one who can offer protection.
The site says it received information from their “Albanian brothers” who claim Stanojević is head of a pro-Serbian, pro-Russian terrorist cell which is a “major threat to the newly liberated Ukraine”. The portal alleges he worked for Yugoslav secret services and the KGB and is currently engaged in getting Serbian students in Crimea to stage rallies in support of ousted President Yanokovich who won the popular vote in 2010.
The site ends with this message:
Glory to Ukraine! Slava Albania ! Glory to Kosovo ! Death to the enemy!
The Ukrainian site which is quoted which contains the offending material is registered as UK blogger *.blogspot.co.uk, presumably to avoid being closed. However, it is difficult to gauge how popular it really is among these protesters. The hit counter reads 150,000 with some 70 blogs published this month, yet its facebook page languishes at just 330 “Likes”.
Serbian commentators have been actively criticising the role of the West and the EU in particular in fomenting the riots which turned bloody this month in particular Nebojša Malić in his blog and on RT and Srđa Trifković. Social media appears to be a key outlet for information in Ukraine today as the interim Interior Minister used posts on his facebook page to inform protesters that the deposed President had fled Kiev by plane.
Note: a previous version of this article misnamed Dragan Stanojević (as Dejan). We apologise for this oversight
