Voters in yesterday’s presidential poll backed Saša Janković, Serbia’s former National Ombudsman with a massive 71% landslide. While 400 registered to vote, in the event, yesterday some 338 cast their ballot for Serbia’s presidential elections on Saturday. One tweet puts Serbian front runner Aleksandar Vučić’s share in the UK at 5.6%.
Janković spoke in November last year at a well-attended event hosted at the British Houses of Parliament and organised by the Serbian City Club. He spoke of his current role as Ombudsman, starting in an era where Serbian government institutions would routinely ignore court orders. He campaigned on a platform of equal treatment under the law for every Serbian citizen.
Another (unverified) tweet came from Ivan Kljajić on American Serb results. In Chicago, 64% voted for Janković, although the total turn-out was just 137. In Washington, some 56% voted for the presidential hopeful. Serbs in Athens reportedly awarded him 89% of the vote.
Despite Aleksandar Vučić’s disappointing showing outside of Serbia, he can console himself with a likely thundering victory as the nation proper officially votes today, a day after the Diaspora vote. His campaign has been both high-profile and well-funded with nearly all of the leading newspapers showing full page adverts on their front-pages in his favour, just one day prior to the election news curfew.
While millions of Serbs live outside of Serbia, and a third of those live within the EU, proportionally very few are eligible to vote in the national elections. This is due to somewhat onerous requirements on citizenship sought by Embassy officials in order to register and then vote. While the Diaspora vote is often cast by the cream of highly educated Serbian citizens (most especially in London), sadly their effect is therefore somewhat symbolic until election rules are liberalised.
The London School of Economics publishes this analysis of a EUROPP poll of Serbian voters in the Diaspora prior to the elections. With 322 respondents, mainly from the academic community, over 90% felt negatively towards the currently government. (Actually over 70% said they were “very negative”).
In the survey, Saša Janković, polled best at 46% while they guessed that over half of friends and family in Serbia would vote for him. In the event of a second run-off (where no single candidate gets over 50% of the vote) there was no scenario in which the respondents would vote Aleksandar Vučić.
The British Serb vote has traditionally championed fringe underdogs. Last year’s parliamentary ballot put Diaspora economist Saša Radulović first and eventual winner Aleksandar Vučić at third, with just 13% of the vote.
Press and media inside Serbia operates under an election news curfew this weekend.
