Something happened then that still stands out in my 
mind, etched with vivid distinctness from all the other 
horrors we lived through. Two soldiers began an argument
with the Grand Duke. He looked at them silently
and then abruptly, without a word, drew his pistol and shot 

both dead. No one moved until he ordered four men to
cart away the bodies and bury them.

Later, we learned that the two men were brothers
who protested against being assigned to different units.
No one disputed the Grand Duke's assignments after that.
