Lockheed Martin to upgrade communications avionics in Air Force fleet of F-22 jet fighters

[Слика: ICNIA%2028%20Jan%202016.jpg]

HILL AIR FORCE BASE, Utah, 8 Feb. 2016. Military avionics experts at Lockheed Martin Corp. will upgrade the communications and navigation systems in the U.S Air Force fleet of F-22 Raptor advanced tactical jet fighter aircraft under terms of a $9.3 million contract modification.

Officials of the Air Force Life Cycle Management Center at Hill Air Force Base, Utah, are asking the Lockheed Martin Aeronautics segment in Fort Worth, Texas, to upgrade the Integrated Communications Navigation and Identification-Friend-or-Foe (CNI) avionics systems in the F-22 fleet.

Lockheed Martin, the F-22 systems integrator, will provide 479 CNI retrofit kits and perform 443 installations that will increase reliability of transistors on the CNI Driver B units, Air Force officials say. The Northrop Grumman Aerospace Systems segment in San Diego (formerly TRW Inc.) is the original designer of the F-22's CNI system.
The F-22's CNI system is a collection of communication, navigation, and identification-friend-or-foe functions that uses the F-22's Raytheon Common Integrated Processor (CIP) for signal and data processing. Each communications navigation identification (CNI) function has its own aperture installed throughout the aircraft.
The CIP, designed originally by Hughes Electronics, is the brain of the F-22's avionics system. It supports all signal and data processing for all of the F-22's onboard sensors and mission avionics. Raytheon acquired Hughes Electronics in 1997.

Northrop Grumman's CNI system provides 14 critical functions, including advanced multichannel and multiband voice and data links, as well as flight navigation and friend-or-foe identification. The system uses software-defined radios to enable simultaneous support of several capabilities for the advanced fighter while reducing pilot workload and minimizing size, weight and power (SWaP) requirements.
The Northrop Grumman CNI system for the F-22 has about 70 suppliers in 22 states, company officials say. F-22 CNI production, integration, test, and modernization activities are at Northrop Grumman facilities in San Diego.
Aiding the CNI system and other F-22 on-board systems are two CIPs in each aircraft, with 66 module slots per CIP. They have identical backplanes, and all of the F-22's processing requirements can be handled by only seven different types of processors. Currently, 19 of 66 slots in CIP 1 and 22 of 66 slots in CIP 2 are not in use and can be used for future growth.
Each module is limited to 75 percent of its capability to give the F-22 30 percent growth capability with no change to the existing equipment. Each aircraft has space power, and cooling for a third CIP.

Each CIP also contains mission software that uses tailorable mission planning data for sensor emitter management and multisensor fusion. The Raptor's combination of stealth, integrated avionics, maneuverability and supercruise at 1.5 times the speed of sound without afterburner. The plane has first-look, first-shot, first-kill capability against potential enemy aircraft and surface-to-air missiles.
Lockheed Martin built the F-22, a stealthy air-superiority jet fighter, between 1996 and 2011. The company built a total of 195 F-22 aircraft -- eight test planes and 187 operational jet fighters.
The Air Force and Air National Guard base F-22s at Langley Air Force Base, Va.; Eglin Air Force Base, Fla.; Nellis Air Force Base, Nev.; Tyndall air Force Base, Fla.; Edwards Air Force Base, Calif.; Elmendorf Air Force Base, Alaska; and Hickam Air Force Base, Hawaii.
On this contract modification Lockheed Martin will do the work in Clifton, N.J., and should be finished by December 2017. A new combat vehicle that swims for the Marine Corps

[Слика: 1475166243138.jpg?ve=1&tl=1]

A nearly 34-ton armored fighting vehicle-- that swims? Marines will have a new Amphibious Combat Vehicle to storm the beaches in future battles.

Unveiled this week at the Modern Day Marine, the Amphibious Combat Vehicle, or the ACV 1.1, was created by BAE Systems and IVECO Defence. The vehicle combines a high degree of protection with amphibious and land capabilities.

The new armored assault vehicle can launch from a ship at sea and then travel by water, ready to launch attacks on the shore. Once it reaches ground, it can chase enemy forces at 70 miles per hour and unleash some serious firepower.

Currently, the Marines use options like the AAV-7A1 amphibious assault vehicle to move from ship to shore. The AAV-7A1 has been in service for about 45 years, and has undergone upgrades, but there is room for improvement and a new vehicle to meet the current and future requirements of today’s Marine Corps.

The ACV 1.1 could join the Marine Corps’ Assault Amphibious Vehicle fleet in the future.

Delivery of Navy's Most Expensive Aircraft Carrier Delayed Again

[Слика: carrier.jpg]

With only weeks to go, the Navy's most expensive aircraft carrier to date is on track to miss the service's November delivery deadline.

That's the latest slip for the $12.9 billion USS Gerald R. Ford, which is being built at Huntington Ingalls Industries. The carrier was originally expected to be delivered in 2014 but has been beset by delays, cost overruns and technological problems with unproven systems.

In June and again in July, two of Ford's electricity-generating main turbines experienced issues. Capt. Thurraya Kent, a spokeswoman for the assistant secretary of the Navy for research, development and acquisition, said the problem originated with a voltage regulator, but she did not provide additional details on the failure.

The Navy is developing an in-place fix for the turbine generators, Kent said, adding that they are not associated with the Ford's nuclear reactor plant.

It "wouldn't be prudent" to provide a new delivery date, Kent said, adding that testing continues on the ship's systems.

As of August, the Ford was 98 percent complete, Kent said. The shipbuilder had turned over 98 percent of the ship's compartments, and 91 percent of the overall shipboard testing was finished, she said.

"We continue to look for opportunities to get Gerald R. Ford to sea as soon as possible," Kent said in a statement. "The Navy is evaluating the most cost-effective and efficient schedule to complete sea trials and ship delivery."

The Pentagon will begin a review of the Ford this month to gather lessons learned from the carrier's construction and completion. That review is expected to last until mid-December, Mark Wright, a spokesman for the office of the secretary of defense, said.

When testing and integration of systems is complete, the Ford will prove itself to be "a super reliable platform out there that will bring unbelievable capability to the United States Navy, and this will all be a distant memory," Chief of Naval Operations Adm. John Richardson said in an interview following a meeting at Norfolk Naval Station last week.

"What we are seeing is what we see every time a new and very capable and very complex thing is literally brought to life," he said.

A Pentagon inspector general's report released in July said mismanagement, software issues, cost overruns and hardware failures had delayed the Ford's testing of its advanced arresting gear, the system that helps land aircraft on the flight deck. The Navy will determine by December whether to go forward with the system on the next two carriers in the Ford class.

7 Nov. 2016 -- The Marines are asking a lot as they develop their MUX drone, short for Marine air-ground task force unmanned expeditionary capabilities, with plans to reach initial operational capability by 2026.

Lt. Gen. Jon Davis, the Marine Corps deputy commandant for aviation, said at the Unmanned Systems Defense conference in Arlington, Va., that this future platform — a Group 5, the largest class of military unmanned aerial vehicle (UAV) — will be equipped to fight from sea as well as land.

This future drone will not be a competitor with the Corps’ new F-35B Lightning II 5th-generation fighter but a collaborator, able to team with the aircraft on missions, he said.
