WHY MONARCHIES ARE STILL RELEVANT AND USEFUL IN THE 21ST CENTURY

The institution of monarchy has been back in the news lately, with the abdication of the erstwhile Spanish king Juan Carlos I and the ascension of his son, Felipe (Philip) VI. Elsewhere in the world, monarchies still make the news and shape events in places as far apart as Thailand, Bhutan, Belgium, Morocco, and Saudi Arabia. To many contemporary readers, monarchies seem to be purposeless antiquated relics, anachronisms that ought to eventually give way to republics.

On the contrary, nothing can be farther from the truth. Monarchies have an extremely valuable role to play, even in the 21st century. If anything their number should be added to rather than subtracted from. To understand why, it is important to consider the merits of monarchy objectively without resorting to the tautology that countries ought to be democracies because they ought to be democracies.

There are several advantages in having a monarchy in the 21st century. First, as Serge Schmemann argues in The New York Times, monarchs can rise above politics in the way an elected head of state cannot. Monarchs represent the whole country in a way democratically elected leaders cannot and do not. The choice for the highest political position in a monarchy cannot be influenced by and in a sense beholden to money, the media, or a political party.

Secondly and closely related to the previous point is that in factitious countries like Thailand, the existence of a monarch is often the only thing holding the country back from the edge of civil war. Monarchs are especially important in multiethnic countries such as Belgium because the institution of monarchy unites diverse and often hostile ethnic groups under shared loyalty to the monarch instead of to an ethnic or tribal group. The Habsburg dynasty held together a large, prosperous country that quickly balkanized into almost a dozen states of no power without it. If the restoration of the erstwhile king of Afghanistan, Zahir Shah, widely respected by all Afghans, went through after the overthrow of the Taliban in 2001, perhaps Afghanistan would have more quickly risen above the factionalism and rivalry between various warlords.

Third, monarchies prevent the emergence of extreme forms of government in their countries by fixing the form of government. All political leaders must serve as prime ministers or ministers of the ruler. Even if actual power lies with these individuals, the existence of a monarch makes it difficult to radically or totally alter a country’s politics. The presence of kings in Cambodia, Jordan, and Morocco holds back the worst and more extreme tendencies of political leaders or factions in their countries. Monarchy also stabilizes countries by encouraging slow, incremental change instead of extreme swings in the nature of regimes. The monarchies of the Arab states have established much more stable societies than non-monarchic Arab states, many of which have gone through such seismic shifts over the course of the Arab Spring.

Fourth, monarchies have the gravitas and prestige to make last-resort, hard, and necessary decisions — decisions that nobody else can make. For example, Juan Carlos of Spain personally ensured his country’s transition to a constitutional monarchy with parliamentary institutions and stood down an attempted military coup. At the end of the Second World War, the Japanese Emperor Hirohito defied his military’s wish to fight on and saved countless of his people’s lives by advocating for Japan’s surrender.

Fifth, monarchies are repositories of tradition and continuity in ever changing times. They remind a country of what it represents and where it came from, facts that can often be forgotten in the swiftly changing currents of politics.

Finally, rather counterintuitively, monarchies can serve up a head of state in a more democratic and diverse way than actual democratic politics. Since anyone, regardless of their personality or interests, can by accident of birth become a monarch, all types of people may become rulers in such a system. The head of state may thus promote causes or stir interest in issues and topics that would otherwise not be significant, as Prince Charles’ views on architecture prove. Politicians on the other hand, tend to have a certain personality — they are generally extroverted, can make or raise money, and have a tendency to pander or at least publicly hold to pre-defined mainstream views. The presence of a head of state with a psychological profile different from a politician can be refreshing.

Most of the criticisms of monarchy are no longer valid today, if they were ever valid. These criticisms are usually some variation of two ideas. Firstly, the monarch may wield absolute power arbitrarily without any sort of check, thus ruling as a tyrant. However, in present era, most monarchies rule within some sort of constitutional or traditional framework which constrains and institutionalizes their powers. Even prior to this, monarchs faced significant constraints from various groups including religious institutions, aristocracies, the wealthy, and even commoners. Customs, which always shape social interactions, also served to restrain. Even monarchies that were absolute in theory were almost always constrained in practice.

A second criticism is that even a good monarch may have an unworthy successor. However, today’s heirs are educated from birth for their future role and live in the full glare of the media their entire lives. This constrains bad behavior. More importantly, because they have literally been born to rule, they have constant, hands-on training on how to interact with people, politicians, and the media.

In light of the all the advantages of monarchy, it is clear why many citizens of democracies today have an understandable nostalgia for monarchy. As in previous centuries, monarchy will continue to show itself to be an important and beneficial political institution wherever it still survives.

On This Date‬ in 1935, the King Peter II was officially opened. It was designed to be just a railroad bridge with two lanes and console for cars. HRH Prince Paul, an uncle of HM ‪King‬ Peter II officially opened the bridge. During the ‪‎Second World War‬ the Yugoslav Army destroyed the bridge in order to stop Nazi’s progress. The bridge was rebuilt after the Second World War and renamed to “Red Army Bridge”, while today is known as “Pancevo Bridge”. ‪

Crown Prince, Crown Princess and Prince Alexander attend “Royal Dynasty – Karadjordjevic Family Return Home” book launch

[Слика: 0.jpg]

10/12/2015

Their Royal Highnesses Crown Prince Alexander, Crown Princess Katherine and Prince Alexander attended the promotion of the book “Royal Dynasty – Karadjordjevic Family Return Home” by Christina Oxenberg Karadjordjevic at the Delphi Café SKC this evening.

Greeting everyone His Royal Highness Crown Prince Alexander emphasized:

“It is with great pleasure I greet you at the launch of the book “Royal Dynasty – Karadjordjevic Family Return Home”, written by my dear cousin, Christina Oxenberg. Over the past twenty-five years, our country, unfortunately, was left by hundreds of thousands of its citizens. Among them, tens of thousands of the most educated. When a nation progresses, when it is winning and everybody in the country has a good life, then it is easy and comfortable to belong to it. In difficult times, when divisions, wars and wrongdoings burden everybody’s life, it is courageous to testify about belonging to one people, and return to it from abroad. Today, Christina Oxenberg, the descendant of Karadjordje, returned to her people. Brought up in a foreign country, she rediscovered her people and showed it to the world. Two hundred years ago, our common ancestor bought weapons and equipped the Serbian army to lead it to revolt. But Karadjordje used to say that Serbia has enough men to defend it, but few learned people to lead the country’s progress. Our Christina did not bring a cannon to Serbia, she came to Serbia to write a book. Through one of the major themes of the modern world – identity and self-revelation – Christina has revealed and showed her family and her Serbia to the foreign audience and our audience. A world that is worth living, working and fighting. Christina, a prominent writer, came with a new spirit and ideas for a new time. I thank her for that. I recommend this book to your attention and I wish her much success.”

Beside Crown Prince Alexander the book launch guests were addressed by Professor Cedomir Antic, a historian and a member of the Crown Council, Aleksandar Jovanovic, a journalist, and Kristina Oxenberg Karadjordjevic, the author of the book.

Christina Oxenberg Karadjordjevic is the descendant of the Serbian Royal Family, the great-great-great granddaughter of Karadjordje, the daughter of Princess Elizabeth Karadjordjevic and an established American writer. In the book “Royal Dynasty – Karadjordjevic Family Return Home” she presented us with an exciting personal and family story that contains three segments: the short story of the family whose fate was firmly associated with one European nation and the history our continent and the West in general, over the past two centuries; Serbian history through the eyes of an American who grew up far from her country of origin, which she, in adulthood, passionately studied; Finally, the reader follows the story of self-discovery. Searching for the roots, the author provides an overview of the history of Serbian dynasty of Karadjordje until today. The book contains photographs from family albums that have never been published.

Christina Oxenberg Karadjordjevic presented herself for the first time to the Serbian public at this year’s Belgrade Book Fair. She is the great-great-great granddaughter of Karadjordje, the founder of modern Serbia. Born in 1962 in New York, her mother is Her Royal Highness Princess Elizabeth Karadjordjevic of Yugoslavia, and the father is an American Howard Oxenberg; by birth she is a citizen of the United States. She is currently living in Serbia. Christina is an established writer in the United States. Her first novel “Taxi” was significantly successful in 1986. Her sister Catherine Oxenberg starred in the role of Amanda, in the famous American TV series “Dynasty”.

The book “Royal Dynasty – Karadjordjevic Family Return Home”, translated by Nenad Dropulic, can be found in all Delfi bookstores, Laguna readers’ clubs, online bookstore www.delfi.rs and on the site www.laguna.rs .

Unveiling of the bust of King Alexander I in New Belgrade

17/12/2015

His Royal Highness Crown Prince Alexander attended the marking of School “King Alexander I” Day and unveiling of the bust of his grandfather His Majesty King Alexander I in New Belgrade. Advisors to the Crown Mr Dragomir Acovic and Professor Dragoljub Kavran accompanied the Crown Prince.

[Слика: IMG_4931.jpg]

Crown Prince Alexander emphasised in his address: “I am very happy, proud and deeply grateful to everyone who made it possible for the unveiling of the bust of King Alexander I, my grandfather, at this beautiful elementary school that bears his name. A hundred years ago, with the Serbian army and his people, he crossed Albania and endured all the difficulties which Serbia and the Serbian people were exposed to. Unfortunately, after the Second World War, his personality was pushed into oblivion, and history was altered and cleansed. My grandfather was not alone in that he was not the only King since my father King Peter also suffered harsh and undeserved treatment. Thank God times have changed! Today’s unveiling of the King Alexander’s bust shows and proves that injustice may be rectified. If our young generations know and respected our history, there is hope for a better tomorrow.” – said the Crown Prince.

Crown Princess Katherine’s message International Migrants Day

Belgrade, 18 December 2015 – The world today celebrates the International Migrants Day, the date which was adopted by the United Nations General Assembly in 2000, because the Convention on the protection of the rights of migrant workers and members of their families was established on that day in 1990. According to the United Nations there are about 230 million migrants in the world today. This date this year is of great significance because the world is facing the greatest migrant crisis since World War II. During 2015, a large number of migrants, about 3,600 lost their lives mostly in the Mediterranean Sea in an attempt to reach the European Union countries. Also during this year, more than 600,000 migrants passed through Serbia. Our country is proven to be a good and human host. The Government of the Republic of Serbia made sure that all migrants who passed through Serbia are registered, provided with temporary accommodation in camps, clothes, food, water, medicines. HRH Crown Princess Katherine wholeheartedly helped in providing humanitarian aid.

Crown Princess Katherine message for International Migrants Day:

“Our country and our people, unfortunately, know only too well what refugee hardship is. In the past, we often faced this adversity. Nobody in the world wants to be exiled from their homes or be forced to leave them. Each wound on the refugee’s soul is large and almost never heals. That is why we understand the pain and suffering of the refugees from the Middle East, who passed through our country this year. We have shown that we are a people of a great soul and a big heart. I am proud of that fact. All countries in the world have the sovereign right to manage their borders, but they are obliged to fulfill their international obligations, so that all people, regardless of nationality or legal status, can enjoy basic human rights” – said Crown Princess Katherine.

What is the state of the Serbian Throne?

When King Peter II passed away, his only son, Crown Prince Alexander, became the new King. The transition of the Kingship was immediate, it was without any conditions and irrevocable. As long as the King is alive, King Peter II only heir is Crown Prince Alexander, regardless of whether he is of age or not. At the moment of the death of the Crown Prince Alexander’s father King Peter II, Crown Prince Alexander became the King and head of the Royal Family.

The Head of the Royal Family and the personality of the King and his function are united in the same person. HRH Crown Prince Alexander does not officially use at this time the title of King, but this has absolutely no bearings on his status and rights. The position and the right pertaining to the King can only be renounced through an official act of abdication, in which case the Crown Prince automatically becomes the new King.

[Слика: 07.jpg]

23/12/2015

Their Royal Highnesses Crown Prince Alexander and Crown Princess Katherine together with Mr. Edward Wayne, Director of the Foundation “Bridge of Life” and his wife Tatjana attended the opening of a new state of the art “call center” of the children’s SOS which was established exactly 10 years ago by HRH Princess Katherine in cooperation with the Ministry of Labour and Employment, Ministry of Health, Ministry of Education and Sports, the National Office of the President of the Republic and Telekom.

On the tenth anniversary of the founding of SOS Children’s line, Princess Katherine called her good friend Mr. Edward Wayne, who along with his charitable organization “Bridge of Life” that helps orphanages around the world, to come to Serbia, to visit NADEL, to assist in the adaptation of premises and modernisation of the technology used by the Children’s SOS line. Mr. Wayne accepted the princess’ invitation, visited the Children’s SOS line and very kindly invested substantial resources in order to reconstruct the space premises of the Children’s SOS line and provide new software and hardware for processing data on children calls.

HRH Crown Prince Alexander Karadjordjevic – At the service of the country

[Слика: pa.jpg]

Upon the final return to the homeland in 2001, Crown Prince Alexander, as the head of the House of Karadjordjevic, was given the right by the government to live in the Royal Compound in Dedinje, the White and the Old Palace, built by his grandfather, King Alexander the Unifier. Although both Palaces are confiscated property of the Karadjordjevics, the Crown Prince invested enormous personal resources into abandoned and dilapidated buildings, with nearly 7,000 square meters, out of which 135 hectares of parks that were overgrown, which represent Serbian Versailles. In less than a year the two Palace buildings were capacitated for receptions and charity events. For three years of independent financing of the Palaces, Crown Prince Alexander and Crown Princess Katherine organized, except for domestic guests, a series of receptions for high-level delegations from abroad, foreign embassies, and their guests, received a number of crowned heads, presidents and former presidents and thus significantly contributed to improving the image of Serbia in the international community.

It is less known that HRH Crown Prince Alexander and Crown Princess Katherine have been persistently, for years, helping thousands of children, war orphans and children without parents, giving them in the White Palace Christmas and Easter presents. Through the myriad of humanitarian activities significant funds have been raised and to help flood victims, allocated to children’s homes, thanks to the Crown Princess’ engagement children have been sent to summer camps in Greece, free of charge. Along with caring for children, the Crown Prince’s Foundation for Education and Culture has been awarding special scholarships to the best students from Serbian universities and providing dozens of scholarships to several European and American universities, including 40 scholarships for master studies in England, at the University of Nottingham. The Crown Prince’s Foundation has organized the participation of our students in a number of summer schools and helped establishing of the first Centres for Career Development in the four state universities. Every year in June 600 vukovci from Serbia and Republika Srpska come with their families to the White Palace where they are recognized for their great academic achievement.

The Crown Prince opened the Royal Compound for tourism and visits, it was in the past a “forbidden zone”. In Serbia, where all major museums have been closed for more than a decade, the White and the Old Palace, which already on the architectural level are the monuments of the highest category, with their collections of paintings representing foreign and domestic authors, from Nicolas Poussin, Palma il Vecchio, Canaletto and Rubens’ school, to Aivazovsky, Eugene Delacroix, Paja Jovanovic, Vlaho Bukovac, Spiro Bocaric, along with a series of sculptures in the open air by Mestrovic, today qualify as the best Serbian museum accessible to a wide audience. At the initiative of Crown Prince Alexander many valuable works of art have been restored, at the expense of friendly countries’ governments.

At the initiative of HRH Crown Prince Alexander free tours of the Royal Compound were initiated for the first time every year for children, pensioners, students, etc. In the past decade, accompanied by the Palace guide, numerous visitors saw the Compound, about 330,000 of them from Serbia. The Tourist Organization of Belgrade has guided numerous foreign visitors, close to 30,000, during most of the year.

The Crown Prince’s wife, Crown Princess Katherine, has achieved gigantic results in the humanitarian field; for 14 years medical and other equipment for our hospitals and health centres, has been coming to Serbia every year, a total of over 14 million euros! The Crown Princess’ humanitarian organization has donated over 200 incubators, mammograms and other essential, expensive medical equipment to Serbian medical institutions, has organized free surgery for sick children and has brought foreign surgeons to operate in Belgrade, on the patients with most serious conditions. With the support of HRH Crown Prince Alexander, six congresses of physicians have been organized, including the gathering for about 500 oncologists and establishing free practice for Serbian doctors at the best American hospitals (MD Anderson, Sloan Kettering, Mayo, Harvard), etc. Humanitarian activities, which have been going on continuously since the return of HRH Crown Prince Alexander in the homeland, have saved thousands of lives and a large number of patients, the poor and people with disabilities have been helped.

In order to cover the enormous costs, which is, even with the annual state support, impossible to do, the Crown Prince and Crown Princess sold their large house in London, acquired through decades long work and invested the money in maintaining the Palace, which is still the property of the state. Therefore, it makes no sense to respond to ugly tabloid headlines in our newspapers about the financial difficulties in the maintenance of the Royal Compound, but only to list the major activities of TRH Crown Prince Alexander and Crown Princess Katherine, who with their devotion and love for the people Serbia and are entirely at the service of our country.
