Crown Princess Katherine attended conference “CSR Serbia: Challenges of corporate social responsibility”

Her Royal Highness Crown Princess Katherine attended the conference “CSR Serbia: Challenges of corporate social responsibility”, which was held at the Crowne Plaza Hotel in Belgrade.

The idea of the conference is to help promote the activities that companies, organizations and individuals conduct in the field of (corporate) social responsibility. The conference had five panels: “Corporate Social Responsibility: The Role of the State”, “Media: Socially responsible reporting vs. business interests of publishers”, “From David to Goliath: Who is socially responsible in Serbia and how it works”, “Men and Beasts: How socially responsible are we towards animals”, and the theme of the fifth panel was “What are foundations and how they work”.

Crown Princess Katherine address the guests and emphasized: “It is my great pleasure and honor to address the participants of the conference “Challenges of corporate social responsibility”. The concept of corporate social responsibility is relatively new in our vocabulary and our daily life, but very significant. I think it is of great importance that the conference is participated by the representatives of successful companies, the state and the public sector, media and foundations. I hope that such a comprehensive approach will help the Conference reach useful conclusions, and more importantly, put them in effect in the future. Last, but by no means the least, I would like to emphasize the importance of the media, which play a very important control function in the whole process” – said Crown Princess Katherine closing the second panel, “Media: Socially responsible reporting vs. business interests of the publishers”.

In addition to the HRH Crown Princess Katherine the conference participants were addressed by Michel Saint-Lot, Director of the UNICEF Office in the Republic of Serbia, Sasa Mirkovic, State Secretary at the Ministry of Culture and Information, Danica Smic, the oldest volunteer of the Red Cross, Budimir Plavsic, the Ministry of Agriculture and Environmental Protection, Vladimir Marinkovic, Vice President of the National Assembly of the Republic of Serbia and others. Support for the conference was provided by the socially responsible companies in Serbia.

Crown Prince Alexander unveils plaque in memory of Cedomilj and Elodija Mijatovic

Belgrade, 23 May 2015 – His Royal Highness Crown Prince Alexander accompanied by HRH Crown Princess Katherine unveiled a plaque in a 19th century at 3 Kneza Milosa Street in Belgrade, as a testimony that important figures of Serbian history lived here, in the times of King Milan Obrenovic and King Peter I Karadjordjevic, great grandfather of Crown Prince Alexander. Prof. Slobodan Markovic, member of the Crown Council, attended the ceremony.

The plaque was unveiled in memory of Cedomilj and Elodija Mijatovic, who lived in the villa from 1875 to 1885, and after that General Petar Misic and his wife Milica Misic, née Vujic, granddaughter of supreme leader Karadjordje.

Cedomilj Mijatovic was a University professor, diplomat, economist, historian and a writer. He started as professor of finance and economy at Belgrade University, and then six times he was minister of finance, two times minister of foreign affairs, and a diplomat for more than thirty years. He was among the founders of the People’s party, he founded the National Bank of Serbia and gave the name dinar to Serbian currency. He wrote historic novels enjoyed by readers and critics, he wrote about religious topics, translated from English, he was the first correspondent for Serbian newspapers from London, and the first Serbian elected to be honorary member of the Royal Historic in London.

His wife Elodija Mijatovic, née Lawton, was a British author who lived in Boston in the 1850s, where she was an advocate of the abolitionist movement. In 1864 she married Cedomilj Mijatovic, and lived with him in Belgrade and then in London where she died. She translated several works from English into Serbian, and published several books about Serbia in English, includingТhe History of Modern Serbia in 1872 in London and Serbian Folklore in 1874. She has founded a Belgrade women’s association. At the beginning of 20th century, she was the first to translate Serbian national fairy tales into English.

After MIjatovic moved to London as a diplomat in 1885, they sold their house in Belgrade to Nikola Antula who then sold it in 1906 to Dusan Vujic, Chief of Staff at the Court of HM King Peter I. In fact the real buyer was Lieutenant Colonel Petar Misic, whose wife Milica was granddaughter of Karadjordje, daughter of his daughter Sava.

Crown Prince and Crown Princess attend marking of 90th Anniversary of General Hospital “Dr Radivoj Simonovic“ in Sombor

Belgrade, 25 May 2015 – The 90th Anniversary of General Hospital “Dr Radivoj Simonovic“ in Sombor was marked today. The event at the National Theater was attended by Their Royal Highnesses Crown Prince Alexander and Crown Princess Katherine, Mr Sasa Todorovic, Mayor of Sombor, Dr Ferenc Vicko, State Secretary at the Ministry of health, Prof. Dr Vesna Kopitovic, Secretary of Health of Vojvodina, and it was hosted by Dr Milan Grba, general manager of the hospital.

General Hospital in Sombor was built with the money people of Sombor collected for the wedding of HM King Alexander I and Romanian Princess Maria (grandfather and grandmother of HRH Crown Prince Alexander). The People of Sombor collected 3,000,000 dinars on that occasion, and the Royal Couple gave this wedding present for the building of a hospital to improve public health, and added another 4,000,000 dinars. When soon after Crown Prince Peter II was born (father of Crown Prince Alexander), the hospital was built in the shape of Cyrillic letter of P (stands for Peter). Hospital was officially opened on 24 May 1925 as the “Hospital of King Alexander and Queen Maria”.

His Royal Highness Crown Prince Alexander addressed the gathering and said he was especially proud that his ancestors contributed to the founding of this very important health institution.

“My family has always helped health institutions in Serbia and I am very glad that this wonderful tradition continues today through the Humanitarian Foundation of my wife”, emphasized Crown Prince Alexander.

After the ceremony the Royal Couple visited the hospital’s department of gynecology and paediatrics, and gave presents to the children. On the occasion of 90th anniversary of the Sombor hospital, the Royal Couple will donate to this institution electric beds for the emergency department, gynecological tables, walkers, surgical instruments and clothes for children, a donation of Lifeline Chicago and Lifeline New York humanitarian organizations from the United States of America, whose Patron is Crown Princess Katherine.

Crown Princess Katherine Humanitarian Foundation has so far donated an ambulance, incubators and a warm table for babies among other things to General Hospital in Sombor.

Support for Trstenik Municipality floods from young Ambassadors from Lifeline Chicago

Belgrade, 25 May 2015 – Thirty-seven young members of Lifeline Chicago Humanitarian Organization, whose patron is Her Royal Highness Crown Princess Katherine visited today Grabovac primary school “Miodrag Cajetinac – Cajka” and Ljubostinja Monastery in the Municipality of Trstenik. These two important institutions were rebuilt thanks to these people from Lifeline Chicago and friends from our Diaspora who love their country.

Primary school “Miodrag Cajetinac – Cajka” in Grabovac was badly damaged during floods in May last year, and now it has been renovated due to a donation from Lifeline Chicago Humanitarian Organization. The roof, windows and doors were replaced and chairs for students were also donated, so that children could continue their education in the best possible conditions. The Monastery Ljubostinja received thanks to this donation wheelchairs, a new irrigation system, a greenhouse and the restoration of the garden.

The representatives of Lifeline Chicago Humanitarian Organization met with Mr Djulica Percevic, principal of “Miodrag Cajetinac – Cajka” school and discussed future projects, and expressed their satisfaction that although they live far away from the homeland, they can still help our country.

Crown Princess Katherine visits the Shelter for adults together with Lifeline Chicago young ambassadors

Belgrade, 26 May 2015 – Her Royal Highness Crown Princess Katherine visited the Shelter for adults in Kumodraška Street in Belgrade, together with the young ambassadors of Lifeline Humanitarian Organization from Chicago who are on a several-day humanitarian mission to Serbia. Lifeline Humanitarian Organization Patron is HRH Crown Princess Katherine.

Within the framework of this visit to the Shelter, members of the Lifeline Chicago Humanitarian Organization handed over donations that included blankets, pillows, quilts, hygiene products and food, to the general manager of the institution Mr. Prvoslav Nikolic. Her Royal Highness Crown Princess Katherine and her humanitarian organizations traditionally help the functioning of the Shelter for adults.

During the day, representatives of the Lifeline Chicago Humanitarian Organization will visit the psychiatric hospital in Kovin, to which they traditionally send aid each year. This time they will deliver 100 mattresses, 100 pillows and 100 packets of sheets.

In addition to Kovin, representatives of Lifeline Humanitarian Organization from Chicago today will also visit the home for children without parental care “Spomenak” in Pancevo. Every year for Christmas and Easter this humanitarian organization sends help in the form of clothes, shoes, toys and food, and this time, too, the children will receive gifts.

Upon returning from Pancevo the young Lifeline humanitarian mission ambassadors will visit a Belgrade shelter for children, and the Home for Children and Youth “Vasa Stajić” which they also traditionally help every year, and gifts and donations will be delivered.

Lifeline humanitarian mission will be very active tomorrow, too, and together with Crown Princess Katherine they will visit Zabrežje near Obrenovac to deliver assistance in the form of household appliances to the residents whose homes were damaged last year in the May floods.

Crown Princess Katherine delivers a sequencer for testing cancer genes to the Institute for Oncology and Radiology of Serbia

Belgrade, May 26, 2015 – The Institute for Oncology and Radiology of Serbia today received a valuable sequencer of the latest generation, which until now no health institution in our country had. It is a device which has the ability to test cancer genes. To purchase this machine the Foundation of Her Royal Highness Crown Princess Katherine allocated $60,000, Astra Zeneka $30,000 and Hemofarm Foundation $25,000 dollars. This sequencer allows simultaneous analysis of multiple genes and multiple samples of patients, which enables efficient testing of hereditary predisposition to breast and ovarian cancer and significantly shortens the time of analysis.

The delivery of this important and valuable machine to the Institute for Oncology and Radiology, officially made by HRH Crown Princess Katherine, was attended by Ms. Katarina Conrad, Ms. Biljana Latinovic, director of the Crown Princess Katherine Foundation, Mrs. Biljana Naumović director of Astra Zeneca Mrs. Suzana Djordjevic director of Hemofarm Foundation and Professor Radan Dzodic, director of the Institute for Oncology and Radiology of Serbia who officially accepted the machine on behalf of the Institute.

Professor Radan Dzodic pointed out that the Ministry of Health took comprehensive action to upgrade the technical part of health institutions in Serbia, and today’s donation is very helpful. In addition, professor Džodić said: “This is a great day for Serbian medicine, especially for oncology, because the Foundation of Crown Princess Katherine, with the assistance of Astra Zeneca and Hemofarm Foundation, has managed to donate to the Institute for Oncology and Radiology of Serbia the machine for testing cancer”.

Her Royal Highness Crown Princess Katherine said: “I am very proud today that we are able to donate such a machine. I hope that many women are going to be examined using this machine and that many lives will be saved. We are going to make sure to provide as much necessary material for the check-ups, and thus to enable this machine, which is unique in Serbia, to work and last longer. The cooperation between Hemofarm Foundation and Astra Zeneca with my humanitarian foundation in Belgrade and Lifeline New York Humanitarian Organization whose patron I am, is an example of unity and good practice which should be followed by all humanitarian organizations to quickly and efficiently assist the improvement of our health care system so that all the citizens of Serbia have a chance for more efficient and better treatment “- said Crown Princess Katherine.

The Foundation of HRH Crown Princess Katherine has also provided training for two doctors in Germany with Professor Reiss from Tubingen Clinic, to work with this machine, so that it’s functioning will be easier.

Ms. Suzana Djordjevic director of Hemofarm Foundation said: “I thank the partners who have initiated and participated in this donation. I am sure that this machine is going to help a large numbers of patients, to some as a relief, knowing they do not carry the genetic load, and to some as a warning to do everything to prevent illness. We want to decrease the infamous statistics of cancer incidence, especially in women, and the first step is just increasing awareness of prevention, through accessible examinations and adequate medical care”.

Ms. Biljana Naumovic director of Astra Zeneca said: “It is a great honor and pleasure to be part of such great beginning, because the Institute is thanks to this machine beginning the fight against cancer. I think this machine is a step forward towards the successful treatment of women in Serbia, because it will allow timely testing”.

The Institute for Oncology and Radiology of Serbia (IORS) is the largest centre for the treatment and research of cancer in Serbia with about six thousand newly diagnosed cancer patients annually. The Institute currently has all diagnostic and therapeutic modalities for breast cancer. In one year, breast cancer is diagnosed in about 4,600 women, out of which about 1,200 are detected at the Institute for Oncology and Radiology of Serbia.

Crown Prince and Crown Princess attend the opening of the exhibition “Fulfilled Legacy”

Belgrade, 26 May 2015 – On the occasion of the second anniversary of the transfer of the remains to the homeland and the state funeral in the family mausoleum of the Church of Saint George of HM King Peter II, HM Queen Alexandra, HM Queen Mary and HRH Prince Andrej, the Kingdom of Serbia Association organized the exhibition symbolically named “Fulfilled Legacy”, set by Mr. Andrija Šošić. The exhibition was opened tonight at the premises of the Kingdom of Serbia Association, and the opening ceremony was attended by Their Royal Highnesses Crown Prince Alexander and Crown Princess Katherine, accompanied by Mrs. Betty Roumeliotis, the sister of Crown Princess Katherine, as well as by a large number of the members of the Crown Council.

Addressing the audience at the exhibition opening ceremony HRH Crown Prince Alexander said: “I am happy and proud that the Association whose patron I am has decided to mark two years since the transfer of the mortal remains of my family members to our homeland. Exactly two years ago, my father King Peter II, my mother Queen Alexandra, my grandmother Queen Maria and my uncle Prince Andrej, were re-interred in the crypt of Saint George’s church in Oplenac. That act fulfilled the legacy of my great-grandfather, King Peter I, to have all the Karadjordjevic’s buried in the same place, in the heart of Šumadija” – said Crown Prince Alexander.

Guests were addressed also by Prof. Dr Oliver Antic, special advisor to President of Serbia and Mr Predrag Markovic, member of the Crown Council.

The exhibition displays the historic moment of the transfer of the remains of the deceased members of the Royal Family, their burial in the family mausoleum of the Church of Saint George in Oplenac, as well as numerous items that in various ways marked the state funeral.

Crown Princess Katherine with Lifeline Chicago young ambassadors continue humanitarian mission visiting Zabrezje near Obrenovac

Belgrade, 26 May 2015 – Her Royal Highness Crown Princess Katherine visited today the Home for Children in Zvecanska Street in Belgrade, the Home for children without parental care “Drinka Pavlovic” and Zabrezje near Obrenovac, together with her sister, Mrs. Betty Roumeliotis, Dr Katarina Conrad from Houston and the thirty-seven young ambassadors of Lifeline Humanitarian Organization from Chicago who are on a several day humanitarian mission to Serbia. Lifeline Humanitarian Organization Patron is HRH Princess Katherine.

HRH Crown Princess Katherine said that she was very grateful to young ambassadors of Lifeline Chicago for their efforts and diligent work in helping their people in Serbia.

During this humanitarian mission Her Royal Highness Crown Princess Katherine together with the thirty-seven young ambassadors of Lifeline Humanitarian Organization from Chicago brought joy to the children from the two homes presenting them with gifts and love that they show at each visit, and the mission continued in Zabrezje near Obrenovac, where the residents whose homes were damaged during last year’s May floods received aid in the form of home appliances (106 refrigerators and electric stoves) and 65 boxes for 65 families containing personal hygiene items and 65 boxes of food. Also, thanks to donations from Lifeline Chicago in the amount of 3 million dinars (€ 25,000), the Cultural Centre in Zabrezje was renovated.

Crown Prince Alexander saw off memorial rowing expedition in honor of Albania crossing centennial

Belgrade, 29 May 2015 – In honor of the Albania crossing centennial, a memorial rowing expedition took off today in front of the Rowing Club “Red Star” on Ada Ciganlija. The expedition will row 1,500 kilometers around the Balkan peninsula, from the city of Kavala to Corfu, where it will deliver a letter of gratitude “Honoring ancestors for future generations” to the Serbian home. The memorial expedition was seen off by His Royal Highness Crown Prince Alexander, who is the patron of the Rowing Club “Red Star”.

The rowers who have ventured into this memorial expedition in honor of the Albania crossing centenary are Predrag Tripkovic, Negovan Spasic, Jovan Memedovic, Milos Ajzdekovic and Dragan Celebic.

“I am proud of the members of the club, which is under my patronage, taking part in this spectacular sporting event. I am very glad that they will in such a nice way represent Serbia in the mission of connecting the countries of the region” – emphasized Crown Prince Alexander in his statement.

Crown Prince and Crown Princess attend “Privrednik” Foundation in Novi Sad charity “Concert for Generosity”

Their Royal Highnesses Crown Prince Alexander and Crown Princess Katherine, together with Mrs. Betty Rumeliotis, the sister of HRH Princess Katherine, attended tonight a charity “Concert for nobility”, organized by the “Privrednik” Foundation at “Matica Srpska” in Novi Sad.

In his speech His Royal Highness Crown Prince Alexander pointed out that as the honorary chairman of the “Privrednik” Foundation’s patronage he was very proud of the work of this institution of exceptional history, rich in tradition, and very important for our society.

“Helping all who need help is part of the heritage and tradition of my family, too. Young people are our future, and I appeal to all people of good will to continue to help “Privrednik” Foundation in achieving its noble goal, to the benefit of all our citizens” – said Crown Prince Alexander.

Beside Their Royal Highnesses Crown Prince Alexander and Crown Princess Katherine, and Mrs. Betty Rumeliotis, the concert was attended by His Eminence Metropolitan Porfirije of Zagreb and Ljubljana, Prof. Dr Jova Radic, chairman of the Privrednik club and host of the ceremony, Doc. Dr Djordje Djuric, Secretary general of Matica srpska, Prof. Radovan Pejanovic, rector of the Novi Sad University, donors and benefactors of the Foundation “Privrednik” as well as the Foundation’s cadets and protégés.

THE ROYAL COUPLE ATTENDS SECOND SPORTS GATHERING OF SAINT SERBIA

Under the auspices of His Holiness Patriarch Irinej of Serbia, the Second Sports Gathering of Saint Serbia took place at Ada Ciganlija today. Their Royal Highnesses Crown Prince Alexander and Crown Princess Katherine, together with Mrs Betty Roumeliotis, Crown Princess Katherine’s sister, attended this morning a Holy Liturgy officiated by His Grace Bishop Irinej of Australia and New Zealand with the clergy of Belgrade and Karlovac Diocese.
Their Royal Highnesses attended a very interesting cultural and artistic programme after the Liturgy together with Bishop Irinej, Mr Goran Vesic, the City Manager of Belgrade, Mr Marko Djuric, Head of the Office for Kosovo and Metohija, Mr Mileta Radojevic, Head of the Office for Cooperation with churches and religious communities, and Mr Dejan Tomasevic, our famous basketball player who is the president of the Association.
There were parachute jumps and Military Special Forces exercise, and after that children showed their sports skills at more than 30 playgrounds in different sports, with the assistance of professional coaches.
Several thousand children took part in different sports activities. At the end the film crew of “We will be World Champions” played a basketball game against Saint Serbia team led by Dejan Tomasevic, Darko Paspalj and many other Serbian famous former basketball players.
The youngest participants received special gifts, and all attendees could taste cooked beans prepared military style. All those activities were free of charge.

Their Royal Highnesses Crown Prince Alexander and Crown Princess Katherine hosted an international cuisine dinner for the representatives of the diplomatic corps at the Royal Palace tonight.
This traditional event brought together the representatives of diplomatic missions who have presented their national cuisine, in the presence of many distinguished guests from Serbia.
The Crown Prince welcomed the guests and emphasized that it is always a pleasure to see colourfully decorated tables at the the Royal Palace, and that these events provide a better understanding of the cultures and traditions of other countries, through national dishes.
Guests also had the great pleasure to enjoy Serbian folk dances performed by Cultural Artistic Society “Gradimir” from Belgrade.
The dinner table at the White Palace was richly adorned with beautiful and tasty dishes from around the world. To mention only a few: couscous plum and meat from Algeria, halva cake from Cyprus, papoutsaki from Greece, satay chicken from Indonesia, barberry rice with chicken from Iran, meat with vegetables – kebab from Kuwait, falafel and spinach pie from Lebanon, chicken in tomato sauce, rice and beans from Nigeria, cold soup and botvinia from Russia, biru mixed rice from the United Arab Emirates and many other specialties.

Crown Prince Alexander attended “Ritopek Cherries” opening

Belgrade, 10 June 2015 – At the invitation of Mr. Jonathan Robinson, an investor from London, His Royal Highness Crown Prince Alexander today attended the opening of “Ritopek Cherries”.

Crown Prince Alexander with great pleasure supported the opening of "Ritopek Cherries” company, which will export cherries to the UK and other countries of the European Union, wishing good luck and successful operation to all employees of the company.
